Something else to worry about. Our galaxy, the Milky Way*, is on a high-speed collision course with galactic next-door neighbour Andromeda.
“The Andromeda galaxy is heading straight in our direction,” said Roeland van der Marel, Astronomer, Space Telescope Science Institute at a NASA press conference. “The galaxies will collide and will merge together to form one new galaxy.”
The galaxies are moving together at 250,000 mph and will smash together horribly in about 4 billion years.
*why does our galaxy have such a rubbish name? Earth has the finest branding minds in the universe: surely we can come up with something better.
